The Institute for Relational Psychoanalysis of Philadelphia (IRPP) invites you to consider joining us as we turn a spotlight on what is involved in the contemporary gendered expression of self in adolescence. Recognizing that we are encountering young people who are reshaping this realm in ways that are more diverse, more creative, more ‘pushing of the boundaries’ or binaries in an unprecedented way, we aim to engage in an exploration of the cultural, racial, developmental, and relational dimensions of assembling a gendered self at adolescence. Why, for example, is there an escalation of risk, associated with increased rates of suicide in gender variance? The clinical challenges are new and pressing and necessitating a more complex and multi-dimensioned study at this time.
The adolescent is at a developmental and familial crossroads and has an interest and evolutionary imperative to move the family narrative in a new direction. This systemic “chaos” (from complexity theory) ushers in an opportunity to learn and reconfigure (along with the emerging adult) theoretical understandings of work with adolescents that has been under represented in psychoanalytic discourse. With an overarching non-linear dynamic system view, we will consider the influence of culture, race and gender on subjectivity. We will be layering in an understanding of the impact of immigration through an attachment lens and the contribution of intergenerational transmission of family attitudes and values at adolescence. Developmental precursors to adolescence will be highlighted in moving into the prism of action that is operative in organizing and re-organizing self-in-relation in the present moment of adolescence.
The moderator, Laurel Silber, will serve a linking function across the different dimensions of content the class will be covering. IRPP faculty will contribute sections based on expertise in the specific area under consideration.

The first half of the year will be class meetings Wednesday evenings, starting September 7, 2016 and one Sunday class meeting, September 18, 2016. The half will move to one Wednesday evening a month beginning January 11, 2017 and one Saturday workshop beginning January 21, 2017 to deepen the discussion through case presentations. -- Dates may shift slightly, but this is the frame we will be working with.

PCPE welcomes all mental health professionals who hold advanced degrees in their fields, work with psychodynamic approaches in their practices, and have familiarity with the psychoanalytic literature. Individuals from other fields who hold doctoral degrees and who work with psychoanalytic ideas in their scholarly endeavors are also welcome to participate. PCPE does not discriminate according to age, gender, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, or physical challenge.
Continuing Education for Psychologists
The Philadelphia Center for Psychoanalytic Education is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. PCPE maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Twenty-four (24) CE credits will be awarded to psychologists who attend the Reading Seminar in its entirety.
Continuing Education for Social Workers
The Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors now designates APA-approved Continuing Education Sponsors like PCPE as pre-approved providers of continuing education courses and programs for social workers and clinical social workers. Twenty-four (24) CE credits will be awarded to social workers who attend the Reading Seminar in its entirety.
It is PCPE’s policy that one must attend at least one discussion group meeting before the workshop to attend the workshop. If only one discussion group meeting is attended, however, no CE credits will be given: APA policy.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
We reserve the right to cancel a program if there is insufficient enrollment, at which time all fees will be refunded. Registration fees will be refunded, less a $25 processing fee, if you cancel your registration at least three weeks prior to the start of a program.
