Expanding the Frame
Both adult and child clinicians enter into the implicit realm with their patients. Please join us over dinner for a presentation and discussion to explore how children’s play and abstract art allows us to enter the implicit realm and expand the therapeutic frame.
Child and adult relational work requires attunement to the unformulated and fragmented expression of patients’ experiences. It is in our creative reception of implicit experience that allows what was formerly incoherent to become felt, shared and then known. How do we creatively co-construct with our patients the emergence of shared knowing? Children’s play and artists’ art are two ways in which we expand the ways in which we receive vital wordless information. Our panel will demonstrate these channels of communication through the presentation of slides of abstract art, children’s art, play, and case vignettes of pivotal now moments in treatment with children and adolescents. The panel is unconventionally structured so the three presenters will be continuously dialoguing with each other, the material and the participants.
1. To increase awareness of how a binarial division of training and process into child and adult "camps" forecloses the range of understanding clinical material for all clinicians.
2. Learning to include both an understanding of the procedural relational processes, as well as a consideration of the quality of experiences in terms of affective expression and intensity of affect for the processing of unformulated experiences.
3. Learning how incorporating plan and non-verbal symbolic expressions expands the therapeutic frame for answering the question, "what's going on here?"
Marjorie Bosk, Ph.D. is a clinical child psychologist who has been in private practice for thirty years, who consults extensively with preschool programs and parent groups.
Jacqueline Gotthold, Ph.D. is a child and adult psychoanalyst on faculty at the Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity and is in private practice in Manhattan. She has published numerous articles and presented on many topics regarding clinical theory with children.
Laurel M. Silber, Psy.D. is currently President of the Philadelphia Center for Psychoanalytic Education, adjunct faculty of Widener University's Institute of Graduate Clinical Psychology, on faculty of the Institute for Relational Psychoanalysis of Philadelphia, and in private practice with children, their families and adults.
Two (2) CE credits are available. CE credits meet the requirement for PA licensure Ethics CEs.
PCPE welcomes all mental health professionals who hold advanced degrees in their fields, work with psychodynamic approaches in their practices, and have familiarity with the psychoanalytic literature. Individuals from other fields who hold doctoral degrees and who work with psychoanalytic ideas in their scholarly endeavors are also welcome to participate. PCPE does not discriminate according to age, gender, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, or physical challenge.
Continuing Education for Psychologists
The Philadelphia Center for Psychoanalytic Education is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. PCPE maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
Continuing Education for Social Workers
The Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors now designates APA-approved Continuing Education Sponsors like PCPE as pre-approved providers of continuing education courses and programs for social workers and clinical social workers.

Cancellation and Refund Policy
We reserve the right to cancel a program if there is insufficient enrollment, at which time all fees will be refunded. If you cancel your registration, a $40 credit will be applied to future programming.
